In early 2023, salesforce shelled out $6.5 billion for MuleSoft, an API management platform. San Francisco-based Postman raised $225 million in 2023 that increased its valuation from $2 billion to $5.6 billion in just one year. The volcanic growth in capital is not limited to a few companies, but expands to the entire API market, as $2billion has been invested in API companies in 2023.

According to founder of programmable web, which manages the global directory of APIs, John Musser, the shift toward software as a service (SaaS) and cloud computing is what has led to the exponential growth of APIs and api platforms.

In a conversation with tech journalist Richard MacManus, Musser says that it is not very surprising that APIs have become ubiquitous. “You need to integrate everything onto the cloud,” and that “everything in the cloud is going to have an API, as APIs are the glue that connects cloud services,” said Musser.

However, with an increasing number of API platform providers, choosing the right platform for a particular project becomes quite challenging. Especially when you are flooded with options. Even a fair comparison seems daunting because one API platform may capitalize on a completely different function from the other.

To narrow down your choice and make the selection process slightly less overwhelming for you, we have compiled a list of 22 top API platforms, highlighting their strengths and a few other factors developers love them for.

Here they are.

Overview: Anypoint Platform accelerates API development, testing, distribution, documentation, and monitoring processes. An open-source and unified solution for API lifecycle management, Anypoint comes with a rich set of functionality to streamline complex project implementation and integrations of data across multiple systems.

Anypoint uses Eclipse based IDE which is heavy to load and sometimes causes crash or show error messages. Well, to avoid it, you need to remove the cache before starting the system, however that becomes a little annoying in the middle of the task. Also, While the platform is highly intuitive, the initial learning curve still looks steep, but once you get familiar with the tool, your search for the platform ends then and there.

Overview: Postman is a desktop application with a comprehensive range of API tools and repositories to manage the entire API lifecycle with ease. It acts as a unified platform for all your API artifacts used across teams.

Postman is a great product. Other than an occasional misbehavior during configurations or pulling a large volume of data, the product does exactly what it needs to do.

Overview: IBM API Connect is a full-cycle API management platform that provides infrastructure and tools to create, run, manage, and secure APIs across hybrid cloud environments. The platform offers automated, visual, and coding options to create scalable APIs, along with Node.js and Java support for microservices applications.

Many users feel the initial setup and upgrades are slightly exhaustive with IBM API connect, especially when you have not engaged the integration specialists from the very beginning. Besides, it has two portals, which is a hindrance to unified experience.

Overview: Apigee API Management platform by Google is an all-in-one API design and management platform that comes with powerful tools for API development and deployment across cloud, on-premises, and hybrid environments.

Some users find the user-interface to access backend services not very friendly in structure and since a variety of services is offered, they feel the tool gets a bit clumsy to operate. You need hands-on training and experience to keep the APIs organized and secure.

What may interest you in Anypoint
